I know it's out of fashion, and a trifle uncool

In fact, that could almost be the title for this site. Or, translated into Latin, it could go under my coat of arms. Um ... "Cogito non trendus et poco non frigidarius est"?

Anyway, we'll be off for a few days, so to ease the withdrawal symptoms from Ben's Words of Wisdom, here (shamelessly pinched from elsewhere in the blogosphere) is the great opening lines quiz. You can even make up your own. Get your iPod (or whatever; in my case, Windows Media Player), set it to shuffle and note down the opening lines of an arbitrary number of tracks. In this case, 40. Exclude the ones that are too obvious (i.e. have the name of the track in the first line) and, well duh, the instrumentals. And don't be afraid to admit that some of these tracks, okay, you're a little embarrassed to have them in downloaded, easily erasable form.

And no sneaky Googling answers, right?

Here we go ...

  1. I get high on a buzz then a rush when I'm plugged in you

  11. All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see your eyes

  23. Here comes Johnny Yen again / With the liquor and drugs and the flesh machine

  1. Hooray, I recognised more than one!

    4. "Good Vibrations", the Beach Boys
    12. "Summer in the City", surely?
    14. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", Elton John
    24. "Birdhouse in Your Soul", They Might Be Giants, hooray! The only song in your quiz that I own!
    26. "Still Rock & Roll to Me"
    31. "River Deep, Mountain High"
    35. "Spirit in the Sky" - Doctor and the Medics?

It'd be a challenge for me to do this sort of thing, considering quite a lot of my music collection is instrumental electronic stuff. Most of the rest is Jethro Tull, come to that.

  2. Post-post thought - where would you stand on songs that start with samples? Something like, say, Kate Bush's frankly magnificent "Hounds of Love" ("It's in the trees! It's coming!") or "Civil War" by Guns 'n' Roses? Is the sample the first line, or does it not count if it's not the artiste's voice?

Well, I do such riddle on a monthly base a email game.

We are 5 players and a gamemaster. The gamesmaster choses 5 pieces of song lyrics and each player 3 pieces. Sometimes we have themes for the rounds, e.g. songs that have plants in title or singer, non english songs a.s.o.

Our own pieces of lyrics should not be too hard to guess, because we get points not only for every correctly guessed singer and song, but also for the optimum quote of correctly solved own proposals.

We get 6 points, if 3/4 of the others guessed our singer, 6 points for the song too, and for each one less or more, 2 points are subtracted.

As I'm from Germany, my English is not that brillant to tell the rules in easy words.

No googling, off course, but we may ask, whoever we want!
